๐Ÿงต How to Care for Your Banarasi Silk Saree โ€” Complete Guide

Learn the proper way to store, wash, and maintain your precious Banarasi silk sarees to keep them looking gorgeous for decades.

Banarasi silk sarees are a prized possession in any Indian wardrobe. Known for their gold and silver brocade (zari), fine silk, and opulent embroidery, they require meticulous care.

1. Storing Your Banarasi Silk Never hang your Banarasi saree on a metal hanger, as it can cause the fabric to stretch and the metal might rust and stain the silk. Instead, wrap it in a pure cotton or muslin cloth. This allows the silk to breathe and prevents the zari from blackening due to oxidation.

2. Washing Instructions **Dry clean only.** Water can damage the delicate silk fibers and tarnish the zari. If you happen to spill something on your saree, do not try to wash it off with water. Gently dab the stain with a clean, dry cloth to absorb the liquid and take it to a professional dry cleaner immediately.

3. Ironing Always iron your Banarasi saree on a low heat setting. Never iron directly on the zari. Place a thin cotton cloth over the saree and then iron it, or iron it on the reverse side to protect the delicate embroidery and silk.

4. Airing Out It is essential to air out your Banarasi sarees every 3-4 months. Take them out of their covers, unfold them, and lay them out in a shaded area inside your home for a few hours. Change the folds before storing them again to prevent permanent creases and fabric tear along the folds.
