šŸ“ How to Read Fabric GSM and Thread Count Like a Pro

Understanding fabric quality metrics — GSM, thread count, weave types — so you always choose the best quality fabric.

Shopping for fabrics can be confusing when you are bombarded with terms like GSM and Thread Count. Here is a simple guide to understanding what these metrics actually mean.

What is GSM? GSM stands for **Grams per Square Meter**. It is a metric used to measure the weight and density of a fabric. - **Low GSM (under 150):** Lightweight fabrics like chiffon, organza, voile, and lightweight cotton. Ideal for summer wear. - **Medium GSM (150 - 350):** Medium weight fabrics like standard cotton, linen, and silk. Great for shirts, dresses, and trousers. - **High GSM (350+):** Heavy fabrics like denim, canvas, and upholstery fabrics. Perfect for jackets and winter wear.

*Myth Buster:* A higher GSM does not necessarily mean better quality; it just means the fabric is heavier and thicker.

What is Thread Count (TC)? Thread count refers to the number of horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads woven into one square inch of fabric. - Generally, a higher thread count means a softer, smoother, and more tightly woven fabric. - For cotton apparel, a thread count between 100 to 140 is standard. Luxury shirts often use 200+ TC. - For bedsheets, 200-400 TC is excellent. Anything above 800 TC is often a marketing gimmick involving multi-ply threads.

When buying fabric from RK Fabrics Zone, consider the end-use of the garment to decide the ideal GSM and Thread Count!
